Dick Van Dyke continues to defy age as he is set to appear on the long-running show ‘Days of Our Lives’ to try something new.
While he has appeared on stage and in movies, he has never entered the world of soap operas.
But the 97-year-old actor, who recently competed on season 9 of The Masked Singer, is set to appear as a guest star on the NBC show, which will mark his soap opera debut.
Van Dyke told Access that he and series star Drake Hogestyn went to the same gym and he decided to take things into his own hands.
“I said, ‘Don’t you have any parts for old people? Come on give me one.’ And he took me seriously and got me a part!” he shared.
The legendary actor is set to play as ‘a mystery man with amnesia.’
Speaking about his role, Van Dyke told the outlet: “I have played old men before, but comedy old men. (This is the) first time I have ever just played my 97-year-old self.”
Van Dyke said he watched some soap operas to prepare for his part.
“Some of the people have been doing it for 20 years,” he said. “That’s all the homework I can do, watch one and see how they do it. The other thing, you have to hold, ‘duh duh,’ there’s the sting of music and we’ve said something exciting.”
The actor’s longtime friend Carol Burnett gave him some advice in a video shoutout, saying: “Make sure you know all your lines, because they don’t do retakes.”
Days Of Our Lives has landed 61 Emmys as well as 392 nominations. It is also a GLAAD Media Awards, Prism Awards, and People’s Choice Awards winner.
